Acid Reflux or GERD

Acid Reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is caused when the valve between the esophagus and stomach becomes weak and is thus the root cause for such ailments. Normally, this valve opens to allow food in and then it shuts tightly but only in normal cases and not in those suffering from chronic ailments. With GERD, the valve stays open, allowing stomach acids to flow back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and many other symptoms and its this which causes lot of concern to patients. It leads to a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus resultin in huge inconvenience for the patient. If you have heartburn that occurs more than twice a week and/or does not get better with over-the-counter antacids, you may have GERD and with intake of ayurveda medications it can be treated. You can contact us for all information on treatment of acid reflux or GERD through ayurveda, treatment of Acid Reflux or GERD through alternative medicine science, free online consultation of acid reflux or GERD.

Causes

Consumption of pitta (fire) aggravating foods and foods of incompatible nature (virudh aahar) vitiates all the doshas, predominantly pitta dosha and it forms the root cause of acidity / hyperacidity / acid reflux / GERD. Vitiated doshas produce heating toxins that are expelled upwards into the food pipe causing heartburn resulting in gross inconvenience for the patient. Increased intake of tea or coffee, or oily, spicy, or fried foods aggravates pitta and leads to acidity and thus such food items needs to be avoided as such on wholesome basis. An aggressive nature and hyperactivity are also causal factors so patients should be concerned on this one as well. Pitta is aggravated by late night work schedules, irregular eating patterns, and/or drinking alcoholic and carbonated beverages and so patients should give a serious thought on this one as well. Increased intake of painkillers and antibiotics also cause acidity and heartburn and so must be taken only under prescribed medicical supervision.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain which can be heavy to light in terms in intensity

  • Heartburn which can be quite misleading and thus physician consultation is very important

  • Pain while swallowing food and its one of the leading sign for all chronic stage.

Ayurvedic Acid Reflux or GERD Treatment is as follows

According to Ayurveda, Acid Reflux is a result of aggravation of pitta Dosha as has also been explained in detail above. Pitta is an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes heat or fire and is very important dosha in our body. It is hot, sharp, intense, acidic and pungent in nature and is located in the stomach thus as has been also evident from its vitiated signs. Aggravated pitta leads to increase of acidic content in stomach fluids and this initiates GERD like symptoms which is a huge inconvenience for the patient. Actually, the reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals and thus can be quite misleading in terms of interpreting the signs. In such patients, refluxed liquid contains acid more often due to aggravated pitta, which leads to acid reflux so the diagnosis can be confirmed from analyzing all these aspects by a physician.
